Five years ago a wine revolution started from this very part of Saryan Street. This lady is not an ordinary businesswoman. At the age of 19 Marianna Saghatelyan was already attracted to the art of wine.

In the past, when clients used to visit In Vino, they didn’t know what wine was. They thought that if it is a rose wine, it is made of rose. Now, when the same client comes to In Vino, he/she orders a certain kind of wine coming from a particular region and made from a specific type of grape. Thus, development is obvious. Wine culture, of course, is very popular, meaning that everybody is interested in it, but not everybody belongs in this.”

Though wine-making has centuries’ long history in Armenia, modern wine lovers weren’t aware of the types of wine available on the market.

“When you enter In Vino, you may see that Armenian wines are displayed in the VIP section. Sorry, excuse me, please. Here is a whole collection of Armenian wines; we have decided to arrange them based on the regions they come from. We have various wines: here, at the top, you may see Georgian wines. Of course, we have a small assortment of Georgian wines. In this part you may see wines coming from Artsakh - Berdashen, Vankasar, Khndoghni, Kataro - all those types. As of now we have the most expensive Armenian wine, Zorayr Yeraz, which costs AMD 70 000. You know why it is so expensive? It is made of the oldest type of grape - Areni. It is harvested by hand, and then aged in a pitcher. The uniqueness of Zorayr Yeraz is conditioned by this entire process.“

“Saryan Street was a good place to go ahead with the idea of wine since the place was empty and few people used to come here. And the core of the idea was to make wine lovers and those interested in various types of wine come here and enjoy wine. Now you can see that there are 5-6 establishments here; all of us are good neighbours. And of course, there is no lack of wine lovers here. This is the first store in Armenia specialized in wines. Do you like this wine? Would you like some more? What is the wine like? What do you drink? I prefer white wine, and it is Yerevan wine and is ideal when cold. Do you need some ice? No, the temperature is good. It is good, isn’t it? Very well.
We have a 6100 years’ long history, as we have discovered the world’s oldest wine press in the Areni 1 cave, and in that wine press there was a residue of Areni grapes. It proves that we used to produce wine there. As a specialised store we try to keep the temperature stable. The temperature is stable in that cave as well. It never changes throughout the year.“

Marianna is one step ahead of the development of wine culture. Organic wines are becoming increasingly popular around the world. If Armenian winemakers manage to become skillful in producing organic wines, they will achieve great success.

The peculiarity of organic wines is that special ingredients prescribed by law are used during the production process. There is no certified organic wine in Armenia, there is no organic wine in Armenia at all since the entire preparation process lasts 3 years. However, the creation of a wine called Trinity began two and a half years ago, and it will become organic in just six months.”
