From 18 to 28 June 2015, Hamburg will again be the centre of photography in Germany. Within ten days, extraordinary ideas, enthusiasm and commitment to photography will be focused on lectures, films, projections, encounters as well as on exhibitions, which may be visited even after the festival.
Ten days, during which photo and art lovers, scientists, photographers, media and art professionals will meet and have the opportunity of intense discussions on photography.
For the first time, Krzysztof Candrowicz will take on responsibility as artistic director for the entire program of the 6th Triennial of Photography Hamburg.
Krzysztof Candrowicz, 35, is founder and director of the International Photofestival Lodz, the Foundation of Visual Education, and the Lodz Art Center, Poland. In 2004, he founded PhotoFestivalUnion, a network of thirty European photo festivals. In addition, Krzysztof Candrowicz is guest curator and gives lectures at many European and international organizations. In January 2014, he became the artistic director of the 6th Triennial of Photography in Hamburg, Germany.
Under the motto of the photo festival – 'The Day Will Come' – the following museums and cultural institutions, Hamburger Kunsthalle, House of Photography | Deichtorhallen, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, Bucerius Kunstforum, the Foundation of Historical Museums and Kunstverein Hamburg, will show exhibitions of international renown artists. There will be more exhibitions at locations such as Oberhafen, an industrial location, and Designxport as well as at various galleries.
Highlight of the Triennial of Photography will be a container village as a center of all activities that will take place during the ten days of the festival. There, Triennial will host ten European photo festivals and ten European photo schools. An extensive program will complement the shows.
Ahead of the festival, from 18th to 28th September 2014, the Triennial, as a partner of Photoville, New York, will present an exhibition of the Hamburg based photographer Henrik Spohler in a container on the festival grounds of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
The motto of the Triennial “THE DAY WILL COME”, a Biblical quotation, serves as an inspiration to imagine a future, a future of photography in a technical sense, but especially in terms of aesthetics. In an interdisciplinary cooperation, curators, artists, futurologists, and sociologists will build a bridge into the future and will evaluate the various aspects from different points of view.
Under the title “THE DAY WILL COME – WHEN THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE”, three institutions of the Foundation of Historical Museums explore their respective photographic collections in collaboration with five members of the contemporary artist group Sputnik. In focus of the exhibition THE DAY WILL COME WHEN MAN FALLS, the House of Photography/Deichtorhallen presents the New York based contemporary artist Phillip Toldedano, who develops relevant social and personal visions of the future.

Complementing the themes and content of Phillip Toledano’s oeuvre, sixty historical and contemporary portraits by a broad spectrum of photographers out of the F.C. Gundlach Collection will be presented in a special exhibtion. In “THE DAY WILL COME – WHEN WATER MATTERS”, Bucerius Kunstforum features the subject water in photography and in painting, whereas the Museum of Arts and Crafts takes up the phenomenon of networking under the title “THE DAY WILL COME – WHEN WE SHARE MORE THAN EVER”. The Kunsthalle Hamburg addresses the ambivalent and often controversial aspects of the “principle of hope” in contemporary photography under the title THE DAY WILL COME WHEN THERE IS HOPE. Hamburg, however, raises six questions about the future of photography, which focus on the relevance of photography within contemporary discourses – “ THE DAY WILL COME – PHOTOGRAPHY REVISES”.
On occasion of the Triennial, an exhibition catalogue and a free guide will be published. A Triennial ticket will be available valid for the entire duration of the festival as well as a professional pass for photo curators and experts.
In 1999, the first Triennial of Photography Hamburg, initiated by the photographer and collector F. C. Gundlach, took place at four museums and cultural institutions as well as forty galleries and other locations. On the last Triennial in 2011, the number of exhibitors had more than doubled, attracting over 200 000 visitors. We hope to interest even more visitors by the extensive program and exhibitions, especially those from our European neighbours.
