100 communities cut off from the grid have so far been gifted the solar LED systems by Philips Lighting to encourage youngsters to plays sport in the evenings. Globally, an estimated 1.1 billion people still live in light poverty, without access to safe or reliable electric light – a problem Philips Lighting is trying to counter through projects like this.

To mark the milestone 100 projects, two under-15 boys’ team clashed in Nairobi, Kenya, on Sunday, May 22, 2016 ahead of the United Nations Environmental Assembly in the Kenyan capital. The Solar Soccer Cup took place under brand new solar LED floodlights installed at a Philips Community Light Centre at Mathare, on the outskirts of Nairobi. The match was watched by senior government figures from across the world who are gathered in Nairobi for the second UN Environmental Assembly which opens today, Monday, May 23, 2016.
