On Tuesday, March 30, transgender rights advocates and the Human Rights Campaign hosted a rally and press conference at the Alabama State House to draw attention to the anti-transgender legislation introduced in Alabama (HB 391 and SB 10/HB 1) and call on state leaders to reject these discriminatory bills.

ALABAMA — Tuesday, March 30th, transgender rights advocates and the Human Rights Campaign hosted a rally and press conference at the Alabama State House to draw attention to the anti-transgender legislation introduced in Alabama (HB 391 and SB 10/HB 1) and call on state leaders to reject these discriminatory bills. The Alabama legislature has been seriously considering anti-transgender bills that would prohibit transgender youth participation in sports and a ban on medically-necessary, gender-affirming care for transgender youth as part of a fast and furious nationwide fight to pass discriminatory anti-transgender legislation. There are so far 192 anti-LGBTQ bills under consideration in state legislatures across the country. Of those, 93 directly target transgender people.

The rally highlighted voices and personal accounts from transgender people who will be affected by this legislation, in-state advocates and experts, and legislators in opposition to the bill.

That these bills are trying to use fear, not facts. Let me say that again, there are no facts, but just fear. To dive and divide Alabamians just to score political points. Dysphoria, anxiety, depression and suicide rates will increase if transgender youth are denied this important science and evidence-based medical care for their needs. Denying them the chance to be who they are isn't just wrong, it's actually putting these kids in danger. “

“My son is the heart of my heart. I tell you this because I want you to know that my son is like every other Alabama boy. Is he ever indecisive? Absolutely. If you asked him what his plans are for college, he couldn't tell you. If you asked him about football, he'd probably say he doesn't know anything about sports ball. If you if you asked him what he wants for dinner, he may say he wants a burger. But if you ask him about his gender, he's sure about that.  He is a boy. He has always been a boy. He was a boy before he knew what trans even meant. He was a boy when he told me that he was one, one morning in the driveway. And my son deserves to be given the same opportunities for medical care as anyone else. “

“Now, I know that not everyone is at a place in life to understand what it means to be transgender. So today, I'm asking you to understand what it means to be a parent who wants the best for their child.”
